Radiofrequecny ablation (RFA) is the latest non-surgical treatment for benign thyroid nodules. It has minimal side effects and complications in comparison to surgery. Following the RFA procedure, the ablated nodule will shrink by 50-80% over the course of 6-12 months. It can preserve thyroid functions and avoid the need for potential thyroid medications.
Our patient had a disfiguring large thyroid nodule for years. It was causing him a-lot of trouble swallowing, neck fullness and difficultly breathing. He declined thyroid surgery several times as he wanted to preserve his thyroid and its functions. After diligent self search he learned about thyroid RFA. He came to our center for RFA consultation . During his intial consultation, we discussed all details about RFA procedure, his prospective prognosis and possible adverse effects . Prior to scheduling any thyroid ablation , the patient medical records and his previous thyroid biopsy slides were reviewed at OCC. Also the patient had a thyroid ultrasound scan at OCC to detect any other thyroid nodules. At OCC, we ensure that RFA is the right decision for our patients.
