At OCC, we have successfully ablated a left lower cystic thyroid nodule, which immediately improved the patient shortness of breath and orthopnea. The night following the Ethanol Ablation(EA), the patient was able to get rid of her CPAP. One month follow up, she was extremely contented from the ablation results and her ability to sleep without the CPAP. Her nodule has decreased 60% four week after EA.
At our center, one Ethanol Ablation session was performed under ultrasound guidance with local anesthetic. Patient tolerated the procedure well with no side effects or pain. She was released home 30 minutes following the EA procedure. The night following the ablation procedure, patient had noted significant Improvement of her breathing and swallowing. She was able to get rid of her CPAP since her procedure.
Percutaneous ethanol ablation (EA) is an effective non-surgical intervention modality for patients with thyroid cystic nodules. In our patient’s scenario that was a life changer for her and her family. She was able to get rid of her CPAP, avoiding a second thyroid surgery and avoid taking thyroid medication for the rest of her life.
